Supporting the Highlands and Islands through the centuries
From small beginnings in the second half of the nineteenth century to an award-winning modern day business nearly 150 years later, Innes & Mackay has continued to grow and adapt with the changing world.
Our story began around 1850 to 1860 when Charles Innes went into practice with Fraser MacKintosh, an already reputable and successful solicitor in Inverness. After Fraser’s death, Charles took over the practice, bringing in a new partner, William MacKay who had previously been an apprentice of the firm – much like our current director Ewan Donald, who also served his traineeship with us and has never looked back. In 1874, Innes & MacKay was formally established.

Despite the many years that have passed, our values and commitment to our clients has remained unchanged.
Towards the end of the nineteenth century, many Highland estates were being converted into lodges, designed to accommodate the rich and fashionable from the south. At this time, the newly established Innes & MacKay was well equipped to handle the impressive volume of this letting and sales business.
Fast forward to the present day and you’ll find that the team at Innes & MacKay continue to be just as resourceful and ready to meet the needs of our clients and the ever-changing economy. Much like our team in the nineteenth century, today we provide estate agency services alongside legal support to help manage the entire process of buying or selling your property or land without the need of third party services.
Years spent at the heart of our community
Taking a look back at our founders, it was well known that Charles Innes was dedicated to the improvement and development of the Highlands and Islands – he was even voted as Honorary Secretary and Treasurer for the Northern Counties Cricket Club.
As for William, his interests lay in the history of the Highlands and the Gaelic language. In fact, when he wasn’t busy in the office, he was writing and publishing several books including his most famous, “History of Urquhart and Glenmoriston”, in addition to writing a Gaelic song, entitled “The Highland Minstrel”.

Although our staff today might not be able to boast much of a talent for cricket or songwriting, we do share the same commitment to the improvement and development of our Highland and Island communities.
Our team has lived and worked in the Scottish Highlands for a number of years, building relationships across the different towns, villages and hamlets we live and work alongside.
We are a community-focused business that is committed to helping the people that wish to live and grow in this region. And much like Mr Innes, we strive to support and embrace the people and organisations within it!
